non-mulberry silks often called the 'Vanya silks' or
the 'Wild silks'. The term 'Vanya' is of Sanskrit
origin, meaning untamed, wild, or forest-based.
'Wild silks' generally come in natural colors -
cream, beige, brown and gold. They are not only
user-friendly but also healthy owing to their porous
texture and thermal properties. All production
processes are eco-friendly and do not at any stage
produce chemical effluents. Tribal communities and
economically disadvantaged sections of the society
are the primary rearers of these silkworms. Most
activities from cocooning to marketing are carried
out by women.
From the magical mountains in the Northeastern
region of India, bordering Myanmar, comes the
sublime Eri Silk Shawl. Eri-culture is an ancient
cottage Industry for the Tribal hill people in the
region and an important source of livelihood. Made
of 100% natural silk Yarn, which is obtained by
painstakingly reeling the cocoons by hand. The yarn
is then lovingly woven, mostly by the women, on Loin
Looms to produce this exquisite shawl.
The shawl is of natural off-white color and is
slightly coarse in texture. The uniqueness of
this shawl is that the texture and sheen become
finer with use! The Shawl has an elegant striped
contrast woven into the borders along with a
tasseled fringe to enhance its aesthetic appeal.
